Back to basics: thoughts on the April 8, 2024 eclipse

The path of the 4/8/2024 total solar eclipse

Eclipses—especially the ones we can physically and viscerally witnesscan't help but evoke in us both fear and awe, dread and numinous anticipation.

The Ancients were convinced that eclipse periods often express divine judgment and/or displeasure with the ruling powers of the world, and thus often herald times of change and events of great geopolitical importance and consequence. Leaders come and go, activities in keeping with the “character” of a specific eclipse tend to unfold, and those individuals and/or national entities with highly resonant charts are likely to feel an eclipse’s impact more than those with less resonant charts.

In his amazing compilation of all things eclipse-related, entitled The Predictive Power of Eclipse Paths, mundane astrologer Bill Meridian carries forward the life-long work of his friend and teacher Charles Jayne, who specialized for decades in the many technical nuances of eclipse astrology. Space only allows for a very brief recounting of the key principles and rules for eclipse interpretation here, but Meridian’s volume is well worth the trouble if you’re ready for its often mind-boggling complexities.

For the sake of brevity and to keep a somewhat narrow focus on our purposes here, I’ve selected only key “rules” that Meridian offers, but I’ve maintained any source information that Meridian includes (a few additional experts are included in parentheses at the end of a rule):

  • -The ‘time orb’ around an eclipse is plus or minus 10 days and events happening 7-10 days before an eclipse work out in an unexpected fashion (Jayne).

  • -Solar eclipses can have an effect up to 3-6 months before they occur and as long as 1 year afterward, but some experts favor longer periods, from 1.5 to 3-6 years. (Johndro, a colleague of Jayne).

  • -Eclipses do affect individual lives, whether they happen closely before or after the birth (Johndro).

  • -If the natal eclipse is again eclipsed, the effects can be powerful (Meridian).

  • -The path of an eclipse mostly concerns political leaders or those directly impacted by that path. Note: Meridian has found cases that contradict this rule.

  • -Rules governing eclipse paths (Jayne):

  • -The total eclipse is the strongest.

  • -The central path is the most powerful part of the eclipse’s shadow.

  • -If a natal planet is conjunct or opposite an eclipse, this planet can be powerful for life (Johndro).

  • -Eclipses work in pairs. An eclipse in one sign can be re-activated by an eclipse in the opposite sign about 6 months later (Johndro).

  • -The events described by an eclipse will frequently fall between this first eclipse and the second which roughly opposes it (Morrell and Jayne).

  • -Eclipses conjunct or opposite the Sun, Ascendant or Midheaven are always more powerful. These points have zero latitude by definition, as do eclipses.

  • -The intersection of eclipse paths denotes potentially significant areas (Emerson and Morrison).

Given the above rules, we'll have more to discuss with the approaching April 8th total solar eclipse than one post can cover, but now that we see it's poised to slash a southwest-to-northeast diagonal path across the continental U.S., let's consider the astronomical details, as listed on Wikipedia.org:

Astrological charts of eclipses (see Chart #1 below) are cast for the most precise Sun-Moon conjunction, but we must also regard eclipses as processes that unfold over time. The astronomical details say as much: on April 8th, the eclipse will unfold over 5 hours, 10 minutes and 7 seconds from its “partial beginning” to its “partial ending” (see chart above), but astrologically, there’s even more to consider because the “totality” of an eclipse (indicated by a magnitude of >1.0) is a process, as well. Here we see it starts at 16:38:44 (UTC) and reaches what astronomy regards as “greatest eclipse” at 18:18:29 (UTC). That time changes, depending upon where an eclipse chart is cast, of course. NASA defines “greatest eclipse” even further:

“Greatest eclipse is defined as the instant when the axis of the Moon's shadow passes closest to Earth's center. For total eclipses, the instant of greatest eclipse is virtually identical to the instants of greatest magnitude and greatest duration.”

Clearly, we must keep both the astronomical and astrological factors in mind because they work together seamlessly, so while we calculate eclipse charts for exact Sun-Moon conjunctions, we also need to consider the relative strength of an eclipse we’re looking at, and that’s where magnitude, duration and other, more astrology-related factors come into play, such as the proximity of the lunar Nodal axis and how closely the eclipse conjunction is accompanied by the so-called Dragon’s Head (north node) or the Dragon’s Tail (south node). More on this ahead.

As you can see in the Wikipedia list of eclipse attributes, the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse’s precise moment of Sun-Moon conjunction has a duration of 4 minutes, 28 seconds and a magnitude of 1.0566. Some astrologers have opined that the “window of influence” for an eclipse is derived from its duration, as in 1 year for every minute, so it’s telling that the impending eclipse in April has a relatively long duration. On the other hand, I have found eclipse expert Celeste Teal’s point system for determining the power rating of a given eclipse a bit more helpful. [1]

Eclipses are tracked by NASA with great exactitude.

In a nutshell, Teal adds points to a given eclipse’s power rating, based on the following. One point (exceptions will be noted),

  • -for simply being an eclipse.

  • -if the Dragon’s Head or Tail is conjunct the solar eclipse degree within 10 degrees or within 5 degrees of a lunar eclipse.

  • -if the eclipse will be conjoined or opposed by transiting Saturn within 4 years. If so, the matters implied by the eclipse should mature quickly.

  • -for each additional planet that conjoins either the Sun or the Moon (opposite in lunar eclipses) within 3 degrees; these conjunctions will "color” how the eclipse influences events and individuals.

  • -three additional points if the eclipse falls in the Aries point degrees (opening degree of cardinal signs Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), indicating critical world matters that may cascade once activated.

  • -if the eclipse falls in the critical 13th degree of a cardinal sign; the balance of power is often an issue with such events.

  • -two extra degrees if the eclipse falls within 3 degrees of conjoining or opposing a prominent world power’s Sun or Moon (like the U.S., China, Russia, etc.)

  • -for an eclipse that conjoins or opposes within 3 points any other planet or angle in a major world power’s chart. As we’ll see below, this point applies (widely, but fairly) to Israel, certainly a nation in the news these days.

  • -Two extra points if an eclipse point falls conjunct one of the luminaries of a major world leader like a U.S. president; one extra point if it falls on another planet in that leader’s chart. In general, eclipses that fall on a national leader’s planets or luminaries are bound to have an impact on the nation he/she is leading.

Without getting too deep into the technical weeds here—you can drive yourself crazy researching all this—the more points a particular eclipse earns, the more likely it will enable geopolitically significant events. Teal recounts that a June, 2001 eclipse she rated as a 7 (her highest rating) fell prominently in then-president Bush’s chart and we all know what was significant about the year 2001 for him, the U.S. and the middle east.

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

As it happens, the April 8, 2024 eclipse point will conjoin (within approximately 3 degrees) the No. Node of Israeli leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, if his “C” rated nativity can be believed [4], so media speculation about his future trajectory are probably well-founded

It can be difficult to fairly rate an eclipse, in fact: judgment calls are often necessary because impacts can be subtle and not very noticeable within the various time frames the experts have favored. Importantly, Teal points out that any eclipse’s energies can be re-ignited as Mars transits them by conjunction or opposition, and, as noted above, that an all-important Saturn transit over or opposite helps the eclipse agenda to achieve some kind of closure.

For its part, Saturn will transit over this 19°+Aries eclipse point in April 2027, so according to Teal, the matters emerging from this eclipse should “mature” between now and then. It’s not difficult to imagine a few current conflicts that could “mature” over that period: could the illusive dream of a “two-state solution” for Israelis and Palestinians finally be within reach, or will the state of Israel have completely forced the Palestinians from their territories by then, on the pretext of rooting out Hamas? Will Putin finally realize the consequences of his geopolitical choices, like playing at nuclear brinkmanship with NATO, aggressively violating Ukraine’s sovereignty and international law and basically enabling the murderous Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria?

Undoubtedly, other scenarios will emerge that fit the “agenda” of this eclipse, as well—perhaps with Haiti, with China’s autocratic designs on independent Taiwan and with other troubled “hot spots.” For these reasons and more, it stands to reason that the condition of Saturn is an important factor to consider when we’re interpreting this upcoming eclipse chart.

Before we even get that far, however, let’s not overlook the really obvious first consideration: the Zodiac degree(s) an eclipse falls in (or stretches across, in the case of lunar eclipses) speaks to the “character” of an eclipse: the April 8, 2024 example falls at fiery, aggressive 19°+Aries. Let’s consider that chart on its own and cast for Washington, D.C. (Chart #1 below).

Chart #1. Total solar eclipse, April 8, 2024, 2:20:37 p.m. DST, Washington, D.C. All charts are cast by author on Kepler 8.0 with Tropical Equal Houses, True Node and courtesy of Cosmic Patterns Software.

Cast for Washington, D.C., the eclipse conjunction in Chart #1 falls in the 9th house of foreign, legal and religious affairs—all arenas that are likely to powerfully impact our upcoming November presidential election. Our current partisan dividing lines seem at least moderately driven by what has been happening overseas (especially with the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas wars), and among those who have been watching carefully (including our allies abroad), there's enormous trepidation about who will have his proverbial finger on the nuclear button come January, 2025.  It takes great statesmanship to lead a world power such as the U.S. in these times

As it happens, the April 8th eclpse will fall opposite Vladimir Putin’s natal Saturn-Neptune conjunction in Libra [3] – point number three!

A lot is at stake here in the realm of geopolitical power and influence, in other words, and this eclipse chart reflects that wrenching anxiety, with the eclipse point conjunct Aries Chiron—certainly earning an extra power point. As it happens, this also conjoins Sibly Chiron, so we’re now up to four (the first point was for just being an eclipse!).

The astronomy of the Nodal axis.

This eclipse is a so-called Dragon’s Head eclipse, with the No. Node falling within a few degrees of the Sun-Moon point in Aries, so add another point—we're now at five. And, Mars will be transiting over 19°+Aries in late May of this year, so cha-ching, the energies of this eclipse will be further ignited at that time by its “Lord,” the ruler of Aries, suggesting a key moment we can watch for.

Teal doesn’t add a power point for Mars transits, but she does emphasize the potential that Mars transits have for re-energizing the eclipse over the ensuing years, and the fact that Mars rules this eclipse during times of war overseas and will transit over it in such short order seems extra significant, so I’m making an executive decision here to add one more point...we’re now at six and counting.

And, if we added points for the eclipse connections with Israel’s radix chart and Netanyahu’s nativity [4] that I mentioned earlier, we would be up to eight, but let’s defer that judgment for now. One way or another, this eclipse is telling us that the most prominent geopolitical realities we’re living with today deserve serious concern and a far more united response.

And let’s not forget that many experts teach that eclipses can impact events prior to their exact dates and this past week certainly demonstrated the truth of this for Donald Trump. The Aries eclipse point will closely oppose Trump’s 2nd house natal Jupiter (Libra), which probably explains how he’s managed to pull two very lucrative “rabbits” out of his proverbial “hat” with his  Truth Social merger and with the New York appeals court decision to radically reduce the bond amount he’s required to post for his fraud case, to avoid the seizure of his properties.

Many feel the major windfall to Trump's net worth produced by the merger could be shaky because it seems to be unrelated to the actual value of his media company and could simply be providing a roundabout way of donating to his campaign, say by the megadonor supporting his efforts, billionaire Jeff Yass. Even so, the deal is being deemed legitimate so far. According to MSNBC’s Ja’han Jones, Yass's support raises the specter of oligarchy:

“The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Friday that the right-wing megadonor and major TikTok investor is a part owner of the company that merged with Donald Trump’s media company, which owns Truth Social, the former president’s struggling social media platform. The head-scratching deal stands to add billions of dollars to Trump’s net worth.

Yass’ name recently started popping up in news reports after Trump denounced legislation in Congress that could ban TikTok unless the social media outlet is sold from its China-based parent company. This was a major reversal of Trump’s previous opposition to TikTok and came after Yass met with Trump in Florida, with the backdrop of the former president’s mounting legal fees only adding to suspicion that Yass essentially could be purchasing a presidential candidate.

Trump claimed afterward that he hadn’t spoken with Yass about TikTok, and Yass is a major backer of efforts to promote school privatization, so I guess it’s possible that the right-wing billionaire didn’t say a thing about one of his most prominent investments. (Yass recently declined a request for comment from NBC News.)

But it certainly looks like Trump is under Yass’ thumb now.”

So, an essentially Mars-powered event like the April 8 eclipse could conceivably empower more such surprising developments, which begs the question—will Trump or won’t he ever be held accountable by the courts? Having already enjoyed every break an American citizen should expect from our Justice system and more, it’s difficult to call, but near-term transits could continue wearing away at his support, and even billionaires may not be able to bail him out through some of it.

Mars, for instance, will be transiting opposite his Libra Neptune [2] within a month; this could take some of the wind out of his current grifts, like selling Bibles during Holy Week to effrectively pay for his millions in legal fees, or it could potentially allow him to further weaponize his misinformation campaign—a story we will continue to follow.

As for the more general concerns raised by the coming eclipse, this Aries eclipse is likely to be naturally associated with wars, attacks, weapons and conflicts. Its potent Mars character could regenerate any conflicts that have fallen dormant, could stimulate the launching of new battle plans, could re-invigorate armies launching new assaults, and so on.  Yes, domestic violence is more than possible, and our upcoming election is bound to be rowdy, but courage should be rewarded.

As for our relations elsewhere, perhaps Ukraine will start getting the help it needs from the U.S. during this eclipse period, although that may be elusive: the partisan resistance to helping Ukraine runs through Trump. But again, courage should be rewarded; stranger things have happened.

Russians mourn as the death toll mounts and 4 terrorist suspects are charged.

Like the shocking and tragic terrorist attack this past March 22 at the Crocus City concert hall in Moscow. Aries Chiron and the North Node have been transiting pretty much in lockstep, so a wounding attack that placed these two points—also conjunct transiting Mercury—in the 7th house of enemies could certainly be related to the impending eclipse. More on this when we consider Biwheel #1 below.

All of which raises the essential question of “location, location, location...” While some feel that the strongest eclipse impact is likely to be felt near the Moon’s shadow trail--and it’s good to be aware of that possibility because this upcoming eclipse trail looks like it could track with a severe weather outbreak (see map here)--it only makes astrological sense that eclipse energies can be felt anywhere on the globe. An Aries transit will do what Aries transits do, whether the Moon’s shadow is discernible or not.

Bottom line, the fact that this eclipse showed up in the 9th house of a chart cast for Washington, D.C. implies that its effects may certainly be felt abroad, especially by the nations whose affairs are entangled with the U.S. in some way.

A couple more highlights contained in Chart #1 above deserve note: first, the chart’s Leo Ascendant is ruled by the eclipsed Sun, suggesting a focus on self-serving or centralized leadership. Not surprising for an election year, especially one in which so many democracies, including the U.S., are threatened with encroaching autocracy. Some, like Italy, Hungary, India, Brazil and Mexico, have already given up essential parts of their liberal democracies for more closed, populist governments, but there are more nations in danger of succumbing to internal and external pressures for both left- and right-leaning “strong-man” populism.

Second, our all-important players in Chart #1 above, Mars and Saturn, are conjunct in the 7th house of enemies and allies in Neptunian Pisces, with Neptune falling later in that sign, in the 8th house. Pisces is an uncomfortable placement for both Mars and Saturn, of course, and in the 7th we have to wonder if they and the alliances they signify can even be trusted! Mars rules the Aries eclipse, as noted earlier, but in Pisces and conjunct Saturn, its influence feels debilitating, rather than energizing, as we might hope.

Several people are still missing and presumed dead in the Baltimore tragedy.

The integrity of structures is in question here, concerns we’ve been seeing reflected lately in multiple ways, in fact: Moscow’s Crocus concert hall was badly damaged by fire and Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed (today) after being struck by a disabled ship

Less physically impactful, of course, the integrity of even the most coherent legal cases against Trump has been called into question in one way or another over the past few weeks, and we have to assume that many more attempts will be made to simply erode or wash the possibility of accountability down the nearest drain. Passive aggression has long been his favored defensive tactic, but Mars’ entrance into cardinal Aries may stimulate some change.

For instance, as I write this, Judge Merchan, from Trump’s so-called “hush money case” in New York, may be preempting the Aries times we're entering by imposing a gag order on the former president/defendant, hoping to protect the integrity of the case against him that is due to come before the court in April. CNN.com describes the behavior Merchan is attempting to contain:

"New York judge has imposed a gag order on Donald Trump, limiting the former president from making statements about potential witnesses in the criminal trial relating to hush money payments scheduled to begin next month.

Judge Juan Merchan also said that Trump can’t make statements about attorneys, court staff or the family members of prosecutors or lawyers intended to interfere with the case. Trump is also barred from making statements about any potential or actual juror.

The former president, Merchan wrote, has a history of making ‘threatening, inflammatory, denigrating’ statements against people at all levels of the justice system, including jurors.”

Unfortunately, Trump’s ranting threats tend to inspire the harassment of any individuals or public officials that he decides to target with vitriol and insinuations. Yes, we have freedom of speech, when did it become acceptable to threaten and harass anyone in society, much less people who are simply doing their jobs? Hopefully, Mars’ entrance into Aries won’t further energize politically motivated violence, but realistically, all bets are off.

Also related here are the attempts to break down the integrity of our election systems before the November elections with hundreds of voter suppression laws, the reduction of voting access to certain regions (often racially biased) and the creation of an atmosphere of fear and threat around polling places, voter registration offices, etc.

Bottom line, as Mars leaves Pisces and catches up with this eclipse point over the coming months, we can probably expect it to manifest in more openly aggressive and explosive ways, as opposed to terroristic, passive and/or implosive ways.

There could be more passive aggression to come, however, as Mars will spend some time conjunct Neptune along the way. The misinformation campaigns swirling around in our politics and abroad are likely to get worse before they get better, it seems. Tragically, passive aggressive dynamics such as Israel purposely slowing down the delivery of aid to Gazans sheltering in Rafah aren’t likely to end before Mars leaves Pisces.

To be fair, the Hamas tactic of embedding itself among Palestinian civilians is also playing a major role in what the UN has been calling a planned genocide in Gaza. Last I heard, two such egregious wrongs don’t make a right, but U.S. efforts to play the mediator in this dispute have so far netted more frustration than progress. Let’s hope that this situation can be resolved long before Saturn transits over the Aries eclipse point in 2027.

Also key to this unfolding eclipse is the fact that key player Saturn will be completing one cycle with Neptune and starting another one during February, 2026, so a little more than a year before it catches up with this Aries eclipse point. Significantly, this new cycle launch will closely coincide with Neptune’s Aries ingress, which raises its own issues. Weaponized misinformation? Aggressive flooding? It’s too much to even think about yet, but the bottom line here appears to be that the path between the eclipse “opening” on April 8, 2024 and its “closing” in April, 2027 with Saturn’s transit is likely to feel punitive, structurally disorienting and dysfunctional all at once. More on this new Saturn-Neptune cycle in a future post.

Returning to Chart #1 above, you might notice that Jupiter and Uranus (Taurus)--semi-sextile the Aries eclipse point and sitting in the 10th house—are also approaching the beginning of their new cycle, which will first perfect the same day transiting Chiron returns to its 20°08’ Aries Sibly placement, making April 20, 2024 another key moment between the opening and closing days of the April 8th eclipse.

Amazingly, Venus will be transiting this Aries eclipse point on April 20th, which suggests we may experience a brief break in whatever tensions the eclipse has stimulated by then. Perhaps a break in the hostilities in war-torn areas? Or perhaps a break in hostilities closer to home? There will be much more to say between now and then about this new Jupiter-Uranus cycle, to be sure, but hope springs eternal that its launch will contribute to a cessation of hostilities.

Despite all hopes, however, hostilities were on full display in Moscow this past March 22nd, as four gunmen, supposedly connected with terrorist group ISIS-K, stormed the popular Crocus City concert hall and opened fire. A brief summary, from Wikipedia.org:

“The attack began at around 20:00 MSK (UTC+3), shortly before the Russian band Picnic was scheduled to play a sold-out show at the venue. Four gunmen carried out a mass shooting, as well as slashing attacks[2] on the people gathered at the venue, and used incendiary devices to set the venue on fire.[10][11][12] Investigators said the attack had killed at least 140 people,[3] and more than 360 concertgoers were injured by gunshot wounds and "poisoning" related to the fire.[4][13][12]

By definition, terrorist attacks are aimed not just at the people targeted, but at their state and their leaders, as well, which fits the profile of a Mars-ruled eclipse, with Mars conjunct Saturn in the infiltrative and subversive sign of Pisces. Back to the issue of the breakdown of structural integrity, the ISIS-K fighters didn’t stop at killing concertgoers, they also worked to destroy the building itself and to damage Putin’s government.

In the outer wheel of Biwheel #1 below we see that these heavy energies fell over Russia’s radix 7th house of open enemies and allies, which certainly fit the situation. By April 8th, however, the eclipse will fall over the radix 8th house, perhaps still reflecting heavy death tolls (their war with Ukraine does rage on), but also the ways in which leadership’s fortunes (an eclipsed Sun) may be impacted by the continued violence, bloodshed and loss.

As discussed earlier, Mars and its transit ever-nearer the eclipse point will be something to watch carefully—in fact, that entire transit will undoubtedly inflame whatever hostilities are ongoing because it will be sweeping through Russia’s radix 7th-8th house sector.

Meanwhile, transiting Pluto (outer wheel) will be conjoining Russia’s radix Saturn in early Aquarius, reflecting a geopolitical turning point for Russian sovereignty. Transiting Neptune, for its part, will also fall over this radix chart’s 8th house, perhaps supporting a misinformation campaign about death tolls, or whatever aspect of current events Putin wants to “spin” for his people.

The heavy focus on Russia’s 8th-2nd house axis will only be exacerbated by the transiting Nodal axis cutting across, as well, so it's beginning to look like there could be heavy economic issues at stake in all this – a point that’s also reinforced by transiting Saturn-Venus (Pisces) filling out an interchart t-square with radix Jupiter (Virgo) and Mercury (Sagittarius) and Mars (widely, also Sagittarius). Perhaps the Crocus attack was meant to target lucrative interests within Russian society, but I doubt we’ll learn the real story any time soon.

How this plays out for Putin, personally, remains to be seen: the fact he was able to engineer a solid-looking victory on his recent re-election day means little since he had no real opponents, but the eclipse will interact with several of his natal placements, so the story is a work in progress!

Final thoughts

There’s so much more that could be said about this upcoming eclipse, but here we’ve at least covered some of the basics. Perhaps you recall that Bill Meridian noted how eclipses “work in pairs. An eclipse in one sign can be re-activated by an eclipse in the opposite sign about 6 months later.”  Well, that’s the situation with last year’s October 14, 2023 solar eclipse, which perfected at 21°+Libra, and the upcoming April 8th eclipse that will happen opposite, at 19°+Aries.

It follows that we should be able to discern a natural continuity in the events and situations stimulated by the first and the second eclipses – for more on that 2023 eclipse, see here. And, for more on the current issues likely to be impacted by the upcoming April 8th eclipse, see here.

The study of eclipses can be incredibly complex, but highly worthwhile because we come to appreciate how the soli-lunar cycles we often take for granted are so enmeshed in the larger picture of outer planetary transits and the cycles that seem to make our geopolitical world go round. Importantly, all of it working together influences our lives on all levels and through all time, with eclipses often functioning as "resonators" between notable time periods.

Maybe this is a good time to mention that these last weeks before the upcoming eclipse are no time for anxiety and/or panic...in fact, it's time to celebrate the season of rebirth in nature and enjoy our families, and above all, keep it light!

We’ve got this, folks!!
